PHOEBE STONE
AT THE TABLE
18 MAY – 10 JUNE 2023
Public Opening: 5 – 7pm 18th May
AVAILABLE FOR PRESALE FROM THURSDAY, 11TH MAY

Creamy white paint that has aged, thinned and in some places is no more than a suggestion of a once painted surface. This is the backdrop to family life in the home of artist Phoebe Stone.
The kitchen table is described by many as the heart and soul of the home and for Phoebe Stone this couldn’t be more true. Bought at an antiques market many years ago its worn white surface reveals the subtle grooves and grain of the two timber slabs that make its surface. It has always been the epitome of beauty and warmth to the artist.
When Stone picked up her oil pastels in 2020 it was at this table. In between breakfasts, lunches and dinners, loud and rushed during the week and long and lingering on the weekends, Stone would bring out her pastels and draw. Her subjects are usually the ceramics, vases filled with flowers and the plates of food and glasses of wine that have been gracing the table that week. Each work is a desire to grab hold of a moment and not let it go. The beauty of oyster on a hand made and painted plate, the shimmer of a fish as it waits to be prepared, and always the soft and inviting hues of a glass of wine waiting to be enjoyed.

It felt right for this solo show that Stone should celebrate this much loved table, almost a family member in its own right, and the beautiful scenes that dressed it during these first months of 2023.
Pull up a chair and join us at the table.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Phoebe is a self-taught Sydney based artist working predominantly in oil pastels to explore the beauty and delight to be found in a well balanced coming together of composition, colour, pattern and texture. Scenes of the domestic, whether food or the accoutrement of daily life, are drawn and drawn again in her signature urgency; impatient to see their pleasing forms and arrangements take shape.
